Accurately Identifying and Tracking Risk at Distance

On notification of distant targets detected by radar, Synergy 3 is able to automatically cue thermal cameras to observe, track, and visually classify approaching vessels in order to determine the potential threat level.

Radar and surveillance – a powerful combination

With the right solutions and technologies in place, it is possible for offshore assets to improve situational awareness and establish an early warning mechanism to identify danger and plan accordingly. Synectics’ radar integration solution has been developed with precisely this goal in mind.

The technology enables our Synergy 3 command and control platform to listen and react to protocol sentences generated by integrated systems including radar, all-weather/vision camera technology – including our COEX C2000 and C3000 cameras – compass, and GPS.

On receiving radar notification of approaching targets, information from cameras and third-party security/operational systems is collated and clearly displayed on-screen, accompanied by vital identification data such as vessel type, name and call sign, and closest point/time to closest point of approach (CPA/TCPA). Where multiple targets are identified, the system will also rank in order of potential threat and cue cameras accordingly.

Putting operators in control

While the system facilitates absolute positioning of camera assets based on ship position and radar information, it also enables operator-led camera control and tracking. The solution has been designed to allow control via either the Synergy 3 GUI or the radar system.

Navigational pulse radars have a powerful detection range that exceeds most camera limits but, compared to the spatial resolution of cameras, have relatively poor accuracy. Unifying functionality through integration therefore provides a valuable and powerful asset – a ‘best-of-both’ tool that can help address the real and pressing need to improve marine asset protection.
