Burning excess gas by flare is a complex but critical component of oil and gas operations, vital to both safety and processing performance. Often used as a last line of defense to prevent harmful hydrocarbons from entering the atmosphere, monitoring the status of flares is a necessity.

Synectics hazardous and safe area thermal imaging camera stations (fixed, PTZ, and TriMode) allow operators to verify combustion and detect potential flow issues in all light and weather conditions – including variations invisible to the naked eye.

Their spectral calibration enables the flare stack flame and/or igniter flame to be isolated against its surroundings (something not always possible with standard cameras due, for example, to smoke or moisture) to reveal variations in temperature that indicate the type and flow of gases being burned.

Burn assurance is crucial, as when gases fail to ignite they present significant risk to infrastructure, personnel, and the environment - a scenario that will result in regulatory non-compliance and associated penalties.

Integrated performance 

Using Synergy 3 to pair visual, thermal, and process data further supports robust and reliable monitoring by ensuring that personnel are automatically alerted to any deviation from normal readings in real time. This is achieved by comparing the data to pre-programmed parameters for smoke patterns, flame size, and temperature, which can be tailored to the specific site.

Integrating and analyzing data in this way can be used to guard against safety or environmental breaches in any key, and potentially dangerous, areas. Tank storage, pipeline and block valve stations, or hazardous process zones are all necessary areas to monitor.
